A lot of Facebook users scroll through their feeds without headphones / music / sound, and recent stats revealed that 80% of users watched Facebook videos in their feeds without any sound.
As a result having videos subtitled or transcribed can be very useful in increasing engagement, views and overall watchability of the video.
Facebook now allows Facebook pages to add captions to their videos, this can be done very easily within Facebook Pages Manager (so requires Editing access of the page).
To Add Subtitles follow these steps.
1. Click down arrow above video post and select "Edit Post"
2. Go to "Captions" tab in the menu at the top of the window that opens up.
3. Click "Generate" button. NOTE: it seems that this will only generate subtitles on the first attempt, e.g. if you enter new subtitles and then try and generate subtitles it does not seem to work. So ensure you click the "Generate" button the very first time the post is being edited for subtitles.
4. This will open a new window with pre-populated captions/subtitles detected by Facebook computers. Currently this text is not very good so requires a person to edit the captions for correct wording, grammar, spelling, captalisation, punctuation etc.
5. Keep the "Pause video while typing" box selected.
5. Starting from the top you can start to edit and type in/amend the text into the "segments" on the right hand side.
6. Segments can be deleted if needed and the time during the video where the text will appear can be changed up or down by clicking the up or down arrows next to each time stamp. Each segment needs to be completed before the next one can start. It is recommended that approximately 3 seconds of footage is subtitled at a time, this will allow for just the right amount of text on each screen to be displayed.
Note: it takes approximately 20-30 seconds to edit a 2-3 second segment of video. So approximately 45-60 minutes per 5 minute video.
It is important to continually re-watch the segments as you are adding subtitles to ensure they are flowing correctly. Each segment can be played individually, and the video in its entirety can be played using the playing screen in the left hand side of the editing window/screen.
7. Once you have added in all the subtitle, watch the video completely (with sound turned on) and look for typos, mistakes, incorrect placement / timing of subtitles etc.
8. When all is OK click the "Save To Video" button in the bottom right of the screen. If for some reason this comes up with an error, click it again.
9. Ensure that other information has also been added to the video under the "Basic" menu button at the top.
Video Title = the content of the video, e.g. if the video is about how to pour a beer then the title would be "How to Pour a Beer"
Video Tags = the content of the video. Default tags are "beer" "craft beer"
10. Click "Save" to save the entire post update.
To edit the subtitle settings for a video (e.g. text size, background, auto captions etc) follow these steps:
1. Go to the video post on the page (within Page Manger) and hover the mouse over the top of the video.
2. In the bottom left when hovering over the video a gear icon will display, click the box "Captions" when this is shown. This will ensure captions are shown when the video is in Facebook users feeds.
3. Hover over the video again and this time go down to the gear icon and click on the "More Settings" link. This will open a new page.
4. On this page set the following settings:
Video Default Quality > Default (leave as is)
Auto Play Videos > On (change to On, default setting is Off)
Always Show Captions > On (change to On, default setting is Off)
Captions Display > click the edit link and change to:
Background > Black
Background Opacity > 75%
Text Colour > White
Text Size > 125%
Click the "Save Changes" button.
Testing the Video
Once all changes have been made it's a good idea to go back and have a look that all is working OK both in the desktop news feed and mobile news feed.
You can edit both the settings and subtitles if there are any mistakes that you notice. Simply follow the steps above to access each particular part of video editing.
