The Department of Weights and Measures / National Measurement Institute (NMI) is responsible for regulating and monitoring the measurements that are provided to consumers, including growlers and squealers.
As growlers and squealers are not considered to be measuring instrument but instead just a receptacle there is a need to batch test our growlers and squealers to ensure we are providing the correct amount when filling them for customers. Overfilling is considered OK as when this happens consumers are "winning" by getting more than they pay for, under filling is not OK.
To batch test out growlers we use approved NMI Acoroc glassware/jub of different volumes to batch test the final volume of our growlers and squealers.
There are 5 vessels used for testing:
200ml glass
360ml glass
390ml glass
425ml glass
1140 jug
To batch test squealers use this method:
1 x 1140ml jug
Plus 360ml glass
Less 3 x 200ml glass
= 900ml
To batch test growlers use this method:
4 x 425ml glass
Plus 390ml glass
Less 200ml glass
= 1890ml
Once a batch of growlers has been tested mark them so as to know where the fill line is, this can then be used as a reference in future if need be. The fill line will be on or above the marked fill lines that are embossed on the squealers/growlers.
Glassware is found in store on the growler and squealer shelves.
