Fraudulent orders most occur when there is a large order (anywhere from $200+) placed for beers that could be purchased much cheaper elsewhere e.g. Dan Murphy's. They are most likely case purchases.
If you suspect a fraudulent purchase has taken place, follow these steps:
- Check if email is a work email or from a free email provider e.g. Hotmail/Gmail etc - if it a free email provider this suggest a potentially risky transaction.
- Is the delivery address a business or residential address? Residential addresses are more risky particularly if they include details please leave at front door.
If you think it is a fraudulent transaction try:
Calling the customer - normally where fraud is involved the phone number provided does not work. If it goes to answer phone check the person's name in the voice message is the same as it is on the invoice. if they answer the call tell them that you are calling from Beer Cartel, thank them for their order and say as they are a first time customer you just wanted to confirm a couple of details on the order.
- Ask them to confirm the last 4 digits on the card and expiry
- Ask them to confirm delivery details
If they can provide both these then the chance of it being a fraudulent transaction is relatively low.
Emailing the customer - if you weren't able to get through to the customer by phone then send them an email. Again thank them for their order and say as they are a first time customer you just wanted to confirm a couple of details on the order.
- Ask them to confirm the last 4 digits on the card and expiry
- Ask them to confirm delivery details
If they can provide both these then the chance of it being a fraudulent transaction is relatively low.
If the customer is unable to do the above then tell them we are unable to proceed with the transaction and that a refund will be provided to their account.
If there is a fraudulent transaction on the account lodge it with the Australian Cyber Security Centre (previously ACORN). Note: you will be sent an email which you will need to click the confirm button on.
